Paula Bär-Giese
Paula studied classical piano and classical singing in The Hague and Utrecht, graduating with honours in both disciplines. She performs frequently, accompanying herself on the piano, as well as the fortepiano, harpsichord and virginals, which is rarely seen or heard in classical music today. In this context, she was a special member of the international Advisory Board of the Self-Accompaniment Singing Project in the UK, which aims to put self-accompaniment back on the map. She recently collaborated as an opera singer in an international film production by Kaap Holland Film, A Beautiful Imperfection, an adaptation of Arthus Japin's book Een schitterend gebrek. Paula often collaborates with author Thera Coppens, performing concert programmes to accompany the lectures that Thera gives on her historical novels. She performs in appropriate costumes, sometimes accompanied by lutenist Hans Meijer. In collaboration with the Musick's Monument Foundation and lutenist/technician Hans Meijer, Paula brings art productions to the internet and YouTube. They are currently working on incorporating the life of the Dulcken family of harpsichord and fortepiano builders into their latest production. Hans Meijer has researched the history of this family and discovered many things that were previously unknown. This will be published in a scholarly edition by the Musical Instrument Museum in Brussels, in collaboration with other major museums around the world that house Dulcken instruments. Paula gave a concert on a Louis Dulcken grand piano (1815) at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich, where they also made music films. The Musick’s Monument Foundation has set itself the task of presenting special repertoire in an attractive way, in concert form and on the internet, in order to make this music accessible to a wider audience. By coordinating music, images, costumes and location, the visitor is taken back to another time, so to speak, which intensifies the experience of the whole.
